Panther Men Finish 10th at Big East Championships

VILLANOVA, Pa. — The University of Pittsburgh men’s track and field team tallied 42 points to finish in 10th place at the 2009 Big East Outdoor Championships, hosted by Villanova University this weekend.
Antony Hobwana proved to be the fastest man at the championships, as he captured the 100 meter crown with an IC4A qualifying time of 10.57 seconds, just two-hundredths off an NCAA Regional qualifying time. Hobwana also placed second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 21.59, good for a spot in the IC4A Championship meet.
In the jumps, Eric Jones and Folarin Ijelu each nabbed All-Big East honors. Jones won the triple jump with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 15.02 meters and took ninth in the long jump with a distance of 7.00 meters. Ijelu was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 7.05 meters and third in the triple jump with a distance of 14.88 meters, sending him to the IC4A Championship meet.
Rounding out qualifying marks and times for the IC4A Championships was Garrett Larkin in the shot put (16.24 meters, sixth) and the 4x100 meter relay team (42.45, 10th).
The Panthers will be in action next as they travel to the IC4A Championship meet, held in Princeton, N.J, May 15-17.
