Men's Track Competes in Multiple Invitationals over Weekend

PITTSBURGH — The track and field teams competed in three different cities across the country this past weekend at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C. and the Aggie Invitational in Greensboro, N.C.
In Austin, Texas, members of the men’s team took part in the 82nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays which were held at the Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas. The meet, which never fails to be an exciting spectacle, lasted April 1-4.
Pitt’s 1,600 meter relay team consisted of three freshmen and a sophomore. Jerome Lowery, Dontave Cowsette, Antony Hobwana, and Jermaine Lowery grabbed 14th in the preliminaries with a time of 3:14.28. Brione Reid-Carthan and Dontave Cowsette joined Jerome Lowery and Hobwana to take 12th in the 1600 meter sprint medley relay in a time of 3:29.27.
Individually, Cowsette tied for fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:53.97. Fellow freshman Reid-Carthan took 15th in the same event clocking in at 1:56.69. Eric Jones was the lone Panther representing the men in the field taking 12th in the triple jump with a distance of 14.68 meters.
Meanwhile in North Carolina, other members of the Pitt men’s team ran at the Wallace Wade Stadium at Duke University. The 10,000 meter run was dominated by Pittsburgh distance runners. Josh Christopher led the squad placing second overall with a time of 30:58.42. Teddy Miller finished ninth clocking in at 31:40.42. Miller was followed by Curtis Larimer and Kyle Kaminski who finished with times of 31:58.81 and 32:28.91, respectively.
At the Aggie Relays in Greensboro, N.C., the Panthers distance runners paced the squad. Greg Kareis finished second in the 3,000 meter run in a time of 8:39.13, breaking the meet record set in 2006. In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Matt Norwood was second and John Morrow fifth with times of 9:55.33 and 10:14.46 respectively.
In the field events, Floarin Ijelu and Jay Pittenger finished ninth and 10th in the high jump with marks of 1.92 meters. Ijelu also finished 10th in the long jump with a leap of 6.64 meters. Brandon Turner led the Pitt men in the triple jump, finishing sixth with a jump of 14.60 meters.
In the throwing events, Kurt Barnhart was seventh in the discus with a mark of 41.15 meters while Garrett Larkin was fifth in the hammer throw with a distance of 44.67 meters. Matt Raquet’s meet-breaking throw of 58.81 meters in the javelin gave him second place while Dan Kwiatkowski paced the Pitt throwers in the shot put, finishing fifth with a throw of 15.65 meters.
Up next is the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. and the Bucknell Outdoor Classic in Lewisburg, Pa.
