Men's Track Team Competes at Fred Hardy Invitational

RICHMOND, Va. -- The University of Pittsburgh men's track and field team traveled to Richmond, Va., competing at the Fred Hardy Invitational this weekend, continuing the success they found opening weekend at the Charlotte 49er Classic.
Antony Hobwana led the Panther sprint team, taking first place in the 100 meter dash in a time of 10.68. Anthony Casciano finished seventh at 11.24. In the 200 meter dash, the brothers Lowery took sixth and eighth with Jermaine edging Jerome by less than three-tenths at 22.37 and 22.63 respectively.
In the middle distance events, Dontave Cowsette paved the way with his first-place finish in the 800 meter run, clocking in at 1:54.07. Teammate Brione Reid-Carthan followed behind in fifth place with a time of 1:56.32.
Greg Kareis and Josh Christopher led the team in distance events, with Kareis placing third in the 1,500 meter run, running a 3:59.79 while Christopher was ninth in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 15:16.08.
The 4x400 meter relay team of Cowsette, Hobwana and the Lowery brothers bested the 12-team field, taking first place in a time of 3:16.89, three seconds ahead of second place Virginia Commonwealth. The 4x800 meter relay team comprised of Kareis, Cowsette, Reid-Carthan and Matt Norwood finished third, clocking in at 7:46.50.
In the field events, the Panthers' Brandon Turner and Garrett Larkin both captured top honors, Turner won the triple jump with a leap of 14.66 meters while Larkin paved the way in the shot put with a mark of 16.40 meters, besting fellow thrower Dan Kwiatkowski who took second with a heave of 15.18 meters. Kurt Barnhart was fifth in the discus with his throw of 42.82 meters.
Larkin took second in the hammer throw with a distance of 46.60 meters while Matthew Raquett was fifth in the javelin with a mark of 52.03 meters.
Up next for the Panthers will be the Texas Relays, held April 1-4 in Austin, Texas and the Aggie Invitational, held April 3-4 in Greensboro, N.C.
