Panthers Kick off the Outdoor Season in Charlotte

PITTSBURGH- The University of Pittsburgh track and field team will make its outdoor debut this weekend at the Charlotte 49er Classic. After a long indoor season, the team will transition into the outdoor season in North Carolina where a number of Pitt athletes will have the opportunity to compete.
The Pitt women’s team enters the outdoor season with two Big East Champions. Senior Mycaiah Clemons was an Indoor Big East Athlete of the Week as well as the Big East and the ECAC champion in the 60 meter hurdles. Her time of 8.36 at the Big East Championships topped the school record that she set last year. Senior Janessa Murphy was also a Big East champion in the long jump, hitting an NCAA provisional mark of 6.29 meters.
Antony Hobwana left the indoor season with some solid performances as well. Hobwana was a fifth- place finisher in the 60 meter dash at the Big East Championships and the IC4A Championships. Eric Jones was another major contributor during the indoor season, earning fourth place in the triple jump at the Big East Championships.
For the throwers, Garrett Larkin and Dan Kwiatkowski were consistent throughout the indoor season. Larkin finished seventh in the shot put at the Big East Championships while Kwiatkowski came in just two spots behind him. Larkin also earned fourteenth place in the weight throw for the Big East.
On the women’s side, sophomore Sarah Anderson had a successful indoor season. She led the throwers at the Big East Championships by securing ninth place in the weight throw.
The Charlotte 49ers will host more than 20 teams at the Irwin Belk Track & Field located on the Charlotte campus. Athletes from NC State, Radford, Millersville, and West Virginia are among the competitors. The meet is scheduled to take place on March 19-20. Friday events begin at 9 am with the decathlon. The meet will wrap up on Saturday, March 20 with finals and relays. Live meet results can be found at http://www.flashresults.com.
