PITTSBURGH—Several freshmen shine in their first collegiate track meet, as Pitt’s women’s track and field team competed in its annual Blue and Gold Meet, this weekend. Events began on Friday in the Cost Center and concluded this afternoon in the Field House.
“I was impressed by the freshmen,” Head Track and Field Coach Alonzo Webb said. “The upperclassmen and freshman did well collectively, but we got a chance to see what we can expect from the freshmen. This isn’t an official meet, but for (the freshmen) it is their first collegiate track expereince.”
In the sprints, freshman Brittany Carroll won the 60M hurdles (9.05) for the Gold Team, while freshman Elizabeth Kline placed second for the Blue squad in the same event.
Gold also won the 300M dash, as junior Da’ Lynn Mills crossed the finish line first (41.17), while freshman Ashley Woodford placed second for Blue.
Blue’s freshmen Jonnique Lawrence and Arielle Fonrose crossed the 500M dash finish line in first and second, respectively. Lawrence won with a time of 1:19.20.
Later, in a very close race, the 4x400M relay team of Kline, Mills, Fonrose and Carroll edged out a victory with a time of 4:05.8. Second place clocked in at 4:05.9 and was represented by the team of senior Kari Hedderick, freshman Corinne Piper and sophomores Miya Johnson and Susan Martinez.
Earlier in the meet, Johnson won the 600M run, while sophomore Rachel Erny earned a first-place finish in the 1,200M run.
Blue’s team won a few field events, as junior Kayla Comrie won the weight throw with a distance of 15.72M, and junior Kelsey Voltz won the javelin (119-7). However, junior Alexis Wilder took first in the shot put (12.73) for Gold.
Gold also won the high jump and pole vault. Freshman Rachael McIntosh cleared 1.64M in the high jump event, while junior Tory Toso led the pole vault corps with a height of 11M.
The Panthers open their 2009-10 indoor season on Friday, Dec. 11, in the two-day Golden Flash Gala, hosted by Kent State.
