PHILADELPHIA — In the first match between the Pennsylvania mainstays, Penn built a seven point lead and never looked back, handing the Panthers their second consecutive loss, 20-16 here today at The Palestra in Philadelphia, Pa.
Cesar Grajales put the Quakers on the board first with an 8-3 decision in the 149-pound bout against Mark Powell. Gabriel Burak increased the lead to 7-0 with his 10-2 major decision over Phil Sorrentino in the 157-pound match.
At 165 pounds, Ethan Headlee closed the gap to 7-3 with a 6-1 decision over Andrew Coles. The win was the 20th on the year for the sophomore. Penn answered quickly with Scott Giffin earning an 11-2 major decision over Karl DiCiantis, bringing the score to 11-3.
Zac Thomusseit broke out of a recent slump with an 11-1 major decision at 184 pounds. Thomusseit yielded just a single escape point in the win over Cory Beaver. At 197 pounds, Thomas Shovlin was a 5-4 winner for the Quakers over Matt Wilps.
Trey McLean was able to pull off the upset against sixth ranked Zach Sheaffer in the heavyweight match, capitalizing on two takedowns for the 5-2 decision.
The Panthers closed the match taking two of the final three weights from the Quakers. No. 17 Jimmy Conroy was a 4-1 winner over Bryan Ortenzio at 133 while No. 10 Tyler Nauman continued to dominate, earning his eighth fall of the season late in the third period over Zack Kemmerer in the 141-pound bout.
Pitt will look to get back into the win column Wednesday night, Jan. 28 as they host EWL rival Cleveland State University. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House.
