Panthers Dominate Cappy Anderson Invite

PRINCESS ANN, Md. — The University of Pittsburgh cross team earned first place finishes at the Cappy Anderson Invitational which was hosted at Maryland Eastern Shore this afternoon.
The men were led by freshman Greg Kareis (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion Area), who posted a time of 25:31.41 in the 8k race to earn first-place honors. Following just eight seconds behind in second place was teammate Josh Christopher (Irwin, Pa.-Penn-Trafford) who finished at 25:39.82.
Strong finishes by Sam Weiser (New Castle, Pa./Lincoln/U.S. Military Academy), Kyle Kaminski (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and Teddy Miller (Ambler, Pa./Ambler) led to Pitt posting five of the top ten times. The Panther men topped the field of eight teams that included nearly 90 competitors.
Senior Ali Briggs (Washington, Pa./Washington) led the Pitt women for the third consecutive race this season, finishing fifth with a time of 18:25.20 in the 5k race. Junior Monica Bhattacharjee (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) followed close behind in sixth at 18:34.83. Similar to the men, the Panthers’ women’s team dominated the top of the standings with six of the top-12 finishes.
Freshmen Miya Johnson (Shamong, N.J./Lenape Regular), Rachel Erny (Brentwood, Pa./Brentwood), junior Megan Heenan (Clarendon Hills, IL/Hinsdale Central) and freshman Susan Martinez (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) all finished within six seconds of each other to help lead the team to a first place finish out of nine teams and nearly 100 participants.
The Panthers travel to Bethlehem, Pa. to compete in the Paul Short Invite on Saturday, Oct. 3.
