INDIANOLA, Pa.—Sophomore Joe Prince-Wright scored a sudden death overtime goal to give the Pitt men’s soccer team a 2-1 victory over Bryant Friday evening at Founders Field. The contest was part of the second annual Pitt Invitational Men’s Soccer Tournament. Robert Morris defeated Western Michigan 2-1 in the tournament’s first game which was played in pouring rain.
Pitt Invitational Men’s Soccer Tournament play continues on Sunday at Founders Field when Robert Morris (1-3-0) faces Bryant at noon, followed by Pitt vs. Western Michigan (1-3-1) at 2:30 p.m.
The win gives Pitt a 3-1-1 record, its best start to a season since 2002 when it began its campaign with a 4-0-0 record. The three wins also match Pitt’s victory total from last season. Bryant drops to 1-3-0.
In the game’s 100th minute, Prince-Wright, a Southampton, England native, controlled a crossing pass from E.J. McCormick and knocked it near post and past a diving Bryant goalkeeper to give Pitt the sudden death overtime victory. Prince-Wright followed the score with a glorious victory celebration with his teammates, ripping off his jersey and sliding into the mud. The score was Prince-Wright’s second career goal.
Pitt controlled play for the majority of the match, outshot Bryant 23-11 and had nine corner kicks to BU’s four. It took a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute when freshman Wils Alpern finished on a shot after receiving a pass from Matt Baker. The score marked Alpern’s first career goal.
Pitt was seemingly headed for its fourth consecutive shutout until Bryant’s Ben Mello headed in a crossing pass from Nicholas Parisi in the game’s 88th minute. The goal evened the score at 1-1 and sent the match into overtime.
Pitt went to work in the overtime period, getting two outstanding opportunities on net including shots from McCormick and Baker. Prince-Wright’s goal came just 29 seconds before a second overtime period.
