Former Pitt track and field standout Deon Bascom will be competing in the IAAF World Indoor Championships, to take place in Valencia, Spain on Mar. 7-9. Bascom will represent Guyana and compete in the 800 meters.
A 2004 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Bascom competed in the 800 meters and was also a part of the 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams. He garnered several first place finishes in the 800 meters, while the relay squads also enjoyed success, placing third and fourth, respectively, in the 2003 Big East Championships.
After graduating, Bascom, a native of Newark, N.J., joined the New York Elite track team with whom he competed in several events. In the 2006 Danny Curran Invitational, he took second place overall in the 800 meters. That same year he placed fourth overall in the 800 meters during the New Balance NYU Fastrack Invitational.
The World Indoor Championships is organized by the International Association of Athletics Federations and is held every two years. This year the competition will be held at the Luis Puig Palace in Valencia.
