Pitt Competes at Golden Flash Gala

PITTSBURGH -- The University of Pittsburgh's track and field teams traveled to Kent, Ohio, opening up the 2008-09 indoor track season with the Golden Flash Gala hosted by Kent State University.
Jermaine Lowery turned in both the 60 meter hurdles and 400 meter dash. His time of 48.67 seconds in the 400 meters was good for second while his 8.34 time in the 60 meters was good for fourth place.
On the field event side, Folarin Ijelu led the Panthers, placing third in the high jump (1.65 meters) and ninth in the long jump (6.45 meters). Freshman Greg Kareis picked up right where he left off during cross country season, leading all Pitt distance runners in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 8:41.18, good for second place. Right behind Kareis was Curtis Larimer in third place, finishing in 8:42.65. Larimer also collected an eighth place finish in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 14:52.77.
The women's team was paced by Mycaiah Clemons, who captured first place in the 60-meter hurdles, crossing the tape at 8.45 seconds. Clemons also finished second in the 60 meter dash in a time of 7.61 seconds.
The 4x400 meter team of Kaetlyn Brown, Da'Lynn Mills, Raquel Bender and Patricia Anyanwu finished first in the 19-team field in a time of 3:55.17. Anyanwu also placed third in the 500 meter dash, finishing in 1:19.50. Teammate Caitlin Cocilova followed Anyanwu in fourth place, finishing just four tenths of a second later.
In the 1,000 meter run, Susan Martinez, Melissa Vignetti and Heather Calisto placed third, fourth and fifth respectively. Martinez turned in a time of 3:03.24 while less than one second separated Vignetti and Calisto.
In the field events, Kari Weimerskirch placed third and Da'Lynn Mills fourth in the high jump while Victoria Toso cleared 3.45 meters in the pole vault to finish fourth. Anita James finished second in both the high jump and long jump and fourth in the 60 meter hurdles to pace the Panthers in the pentathlon, finishing in third place with 3,389 points.
The Panthers will not return to action until 2009, opening the new year January 9 at the Akron Quad in Akron, Ohio.
