PITTSBURGH—Pitt earned the Big East’s weekly offensive and defensive Player of the Week awards today following its exciting 19-15 win over West Virginia in the 101st “Backyard Brawl.”
Sophomore tailback LeSean McCoy was named the Big East Offensive Player of the Week, while senior middle linebacker Scott McKillop was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week.
McCoy (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt/Milford Academy) rushed for a game- and career-high 183 yards on 33 carries (5.5 avg.). He scored two touchdowns in the final eight minutes to lead Pitt to a come-from-behind victory. On the game-winning drive, McCoy accounted for 55 of the 59 yards covered. He capped the march with a one-yard plunge with 52 seconds left.
McCoy leads the nation in scoring (10.9 ppg.) and ranks eighth in rushing (118.9 yards/game). He has 35 total touchdowns for his brief career, eclipsing receiver Larry Fitzgerald’s Pitt record for TDs scored as a freshman and sophomore (34 from 2002-03).
McCoy has produced back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons (1,308 this year and 1,328 as a true freshman) and currently ranks seventh all-time at Pitt with 2,636 rushing yards.
It was the second time McCoy has earned the Big East’s weekly offensive honor this year and the third time for his career.
McKillop (Export, Pa./Kiski Area) received the conference’s weekly defensive award for the fourth time this year (fifth overall). He spearheaded a Pitt defensive effort that limited the Big East’s most prolific rushing offense to 74 yards below its season average and just one touchdown.
The veteran linebacker finished with a team-high seven tackles and continually plugged the line to hold dangerous WVU tailback Noel Devine to just 1.4 yards per carry (just 17 yards rushing — 95 yards below his average).
McKillop ranks first nationally in solo stops (6.91 solos/game), 12th in total tackles (10.27 tackles/game) and 25th in tackles for loss (1.32 TFLs/game). He leads the Big East in each of those categories.
