PITTSBURGH - The Pitt men's track and field team is headed to the Penn Relays this week in Philadelphia. The annual competition is one of the regular season's most exciting meets as it will feature numerous top-25 teams and several elite competitors on the national and international level. Pitt will mostly compete Thursday through Saturday and has been named a team to watch in the 6,400-meter relay (4 x mile) and distance medley relay.
Pitt has three solid competitors in the mile to compete in the 6,400-meter relay as well as a handful of runners who could make up the fourth selection. The squad is led by Sam Bair (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kent State) and Tim Konoval (Parry Sound, Ontario/Central Connecticut State), both regional qualifiers. Senior Eric Fleming (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) was also a regional qualifier last season and a consistent competitor in middle distance.
The men's distance medley relay team was one of the nation's top during the indoor season and consisted of the three runners above and Kareem Cousar (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic). The squad hasn't competed this outdoor season but ran a season-best time of 9:39.03, a school record, during the indoor season.
The Penn Relays will be the team's final regular-season competition before the Big East Championships next weekend.
