SACRAMENTO, Calif.--Freshman Alex Shoemaker scored Pitt's lone run in the 9-1 loss to Minnesota during the first day of action in the Capitol Classic in the Sacramento Softball Complex.
Shoemaker (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) scored Pitt's lone run in the fifth after senior Sheena Hellon (Sacramento, Calif./Cordova) tallied a two-out single to right field.
The bulk of Minnesota's runs were tallied in the second inning, where five hits were recorded, including a lead-off home run and a Pitt error. A walk with bases loaded and a wild pitch, scored two more runs for the Golden Gophers in the top of the sixth.
Pitt had a scoring opportunity early in the first when junior Mary Hecker (Roseville, Calif./Roseville) advanced to third and junior Rebecca Stottlemyer (Charleroi, Pa./Home schooled) stole second with two outs. However, the Panthers stranded both with the next batter struck out.
Freshman Kayla Zinger (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunnyslope) pitched the opening two innings giving up six hits and two walks in the game. Sophomore Kaitlyn Schuster (Ellwood City, Pa./Lincoln) threw four innings in relief, allowing two runs off five hits.
