Stultz Breaks Diving Record In Victory

PITTSBURGH--Senior Jeremy Stultz eclipsed his own record, as Pitt's men's swimming and diving team defeated Cincinnati, 146-89, this afternoon at Trees Pool.
Stultz (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) made his debut this season with a top finish on the 1M and 3M boards. He won the 1M with a score of 379.95, while earning a school record 406.28 points on the 3M. His previous record was set last season on the 3M board at 396.67 points. This is the second consecutive weekend the men's diving team has dropped a record, as junior Alex Volovetski (Brandon, Fla./Armwood) broke the 1M diving record last weekend.
Swimming opened as freshman Andrzej Dubiel (Dzierzoniow, Poland/School of Sports Championship), senior Warren Barnes (Pickering, Ont./Dunbarton Secondary), sophomore Geoff Morgan (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall Central) and junior Patrick Mansfield (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) paced the Panthers in the 400 medley relay, finishing first at 3:29.43.
Winning an individual event from that relay was Barnes in the 200 breast (2:05.24). Mansfield turned in a second-place performance in the 100 free (47.60), while Dubiel just feel short of first as he was edged out but a Cincinnati swimmer in the 50 free.
Freshman Zach Phillips (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannaock) out performed his competition in the 1000 free (9:45.63), while turning in a second-place performance in the 500 free (4:42.46).
Phillips also rounded out the sweep in the 200 free, as freshman Alex McLaren (North Saanich, B.C./Stellys Secondary) and junior Andrew Kyrejko (West Orange, N.J./The Montclair Kimberly Academy) finished first and second ahead of him. McLaren took the led on the last turn in the event to earn the win at the 1:44.32 mark.
McLaren would then touch the wall first in the 200 back (1:53.52) for the Panthers, while Kyrejko held on to finish second in the 200 fly (1:55.05).
Swimming in his first meet of the season, junior Adam Plutecki (Zielona Gora, Poland/No. VII School) won the 200 IM (1:53.98). He was later the second leg of the 400 free relay team that included Dubiel, McLaren and Mansfield, which stopped the clock at 3:10.00 in the final event of the meet.
The Panthers return to action in Fitzgerald Field House on Friday, Nov. 9, hosting Notre Dame at 3 p.m.
