SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The men's track and field team had one finalist competing in day three of the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Sophomore Keith Higham finished eighth in the pole vault finals today with a height of 5.35 meters.
With his eighth-place finish, Higham (Carlisle, England/Trinity Carlisle) was the first Panther to earn All-America honors this year. He entered today's finals in a four-way tie for first after vaulting to 5.30 meters in the preliminaries.
Higham is a three-time NCAA qualifier. He placed 14th last year and qualified for the indoor championships this year but couldn't compete because of a hamstring injury. A three-time Big East champion, he recently won the IC4A championships and also broke the school record earlier this year with a vault of 5.37 meters.
Pitt has two more finalists in tomorrow's competition with Tony Bonura (Plum, Pa./Canisius College) in the javelin and Sam Bair (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area) in the 1,500 meters. Panther fans can catch these competitors in action by tuning into CBS for live coverage from 3:30 to 6 p.m. EST. In addition, TrackShark.com is offering a live blog with a play-by-play of each event.
