Women's Swimming and Diving Wins Big East Opener

SYRACUSE, N.Y.-The women's swimming and diving team rallied 10 first-place finishes, as Pitt routed Syracuse 173-70 this afternoon at Ted Webster Pool. The Panthers are 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in the Big East.
For the second-consecutive day, Kristin Caiazzo (Princeton, N.J./Hopewell Valley) won the 1M diving event with a score of 243.37 and Colleen Kristobak (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) finished in second-place with a dive of 214.42. Kristobak, claimed the 3M boards with 231.37 points and Caiazzo was second with 230.10.
The meet opened as the 400 medley relay team of Andrea Shoust (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont./White Pines C & VS), Karla Leite (Massapequa, N.Y./Farmingdale), Brittany Stevens (Peachtree City, Ga./Starr's Mill), and Stacie Safritt (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) swam to a 3:55.50 finish, winning the event.
Kathy Siuda (Waterloo, Ont./Bluvale Collegiate) swam to a 10:17.87 victory in the 1,000 free, while Kristin Brown (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) and Kelly Redcay (Reading, Pa./Wilson) pulled a one-two punch in the 200 free with times of 1:51.96 and 1:54.37, respectively. Later, Suida won her second race of the day with a 5:02.14 effort in the 500 free.
In the 50 free, Kelly O'Hara (Voorhees, N.J./Timber Creek), Safritt and Shoust took the top-three spots. They all finished with close times of 24.50, 24.51 and 24.69.
Kelly Redcay (Reading, Pa./Wilson) (52.56) and Safritt (52.97) took first and second in the 100 free, while Shoust won the 200 back (2:05.10). In the 200 breast, it was Leite turning in the Panther win with 2:23.63 on the clock.
The last swimming event was the 400 free relay and Brown, Kimmie Baird (Upper Dublin, Pa./Upper Dublin), Redcay and O'Hara turned in the win for the Panthers.
Pitt opens its home schedule on Friday, Nov. 4 when they host Notre Dame at 4 p.m. in Trees Pool.
