Men's Swimming and Diving Beats Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y.-The University of Pittsburgh men's swimming and diving team claimed 11 first-place finishes, as Pitt rolled over Syracuse 169-74, this afternoon at Ted Webster Pool. Pitt improves to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in the Big East.
The diving squad looked strong again today as they took the top-three finishes in both the 1M and 3M boards. The order for the 3M was Dennis Nemtsanov (Calhoun, Ga./Robert E Lee), Aleksandr Volvetski (Seffner, Fla./Armwood), and Jeremy Stultz (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills). Volovetski led the way in the 1M, while Nemtsanov and Stultz rounded out the top-three.
Thomas Bird (Charlestown, W.Va./Capital), Warren Barnes (Pickering, Ont./Dunbarton), Jason Miller (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), and Darryl Washington (Aldan, Pa./Penn Wood) kicked off action with a win in the 400 medley relay (3:24.72). Later on in the meet, Bird claimed the 50 free with a time of 21.05, while Washington paced the 100 free (47.27).
Chris George (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) paced the 1,000 free with a 9:29.17 finish, while Jonathan Buchanan (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek) followed in second at 9:49.69. George turned in another first-place victory in the 500 free (4:40.00).
Miller had success in the 200 IM, as he finished at 1:55.49 ahead of the bunch. He also won the 200 fly at 1:54.25.
In the 200 back, Jeff Leath (Mechanicsville, Va./New Community) claimed the race with a 1:53.27 effort. In the swimming finale Bird, Leath, Patrick Mansfield (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Juienne) and Nathan McCutcheon (Apollo, Pa./Kiski) teamed to earn the crown in the 400 free relay.
Pitt opens its home schedule on Friday, Nov. 4 when they host Notre Dame at 4 p.m. in Trees Pool.
