PITTSBURGH?The Pittsburgh women?s swimming and diving team improved to 8-3 with a 139.5-103.5 victory over Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon.
Top Panther finishers included swimmers Kate Butrie (Orefield, Pa./Parkland), Kristin Brown (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) and Jordan Wallace (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic/Georgia).
The women?s 400 yard medley team of Andrea Shoust (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario/White Pines C&VS), Cynthia Snyder (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional), Jen Koch (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) and Wallace started the meet off right with a victory for Panthers. The team finished five seconds faster than the second place team with a time of 3:47.26.
Butrie swam her season-best time and took first place in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:58.85. Butrie earned her first individual title of the meet in the 1000 yard freestyle clocking in at 10:07.76, over nine seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
Brown added on to the pile of Panther victories with two individual wins of her own. She clocked in at 1:51.45 in the 200 freestyle and 51.91 seconds in the 100 freestyle. After placing second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.73 seconds, Wallace also claimed a first-place finish for herself in the 200 yard backstroke, touching in at 2:04.27.
Megan McCandless (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy), a freshman diver, placed among the top two in both events, including a first-place score of 241.05 in the 3-meter event. Earlier in the meet, McCandless placed second in the 1-meter diving with a score of 229.5 points. Junior Colleen Kristobak (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and freshman Kristin Caiazzo (Princeton, N.J./Hopewell Valley) finished third and fourth in the event.
The Panthers continued to dominate after juniors Amy Miteff (Wellington, Fla./Wellington) and Kelli Krallman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) claimed first and second place titles respectively in the 200 butterfly. Koch picked up another victory for Pittsburgh in the 200 individual medley, just trailing the first-place finisher by three-tenths of a second.
Snyder finished up in second place in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:20.40. Following closely behind was teammate Lindsey Tiberio (Connellsville, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic), who took third place after finishing slightly more than a second after Snyder.
Pittsburgh will return to the pool to face Clarion and Duquesne next Saturday, February 5, at 11 a.m. Panther seniors will be recognized at the meet.
