PITTSBURGH?The University of Pittsburgh football team concluded spring drills today with the annual Blue-Gold Game at Heinz Field. The Panthers were divided up into two separate squads, featuring both offensive and defensive personnel. The Blue defeated the Gold, 13-7.
The game was the final of 15 practice sessions for Pittsburgh. The Panthers, coming off four consecutive bowl seasons, open the 2004 campaign Sept. 4 at South Florida.
The Blue scored the game?s first 13 points before the Gold tacked on a late touchdown. Sophomore receiver Joe DelSardo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle) opened the scoring on the first play of the second quarter with a 33-yard end around. Senior kicker J.B. Gibboney (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon) kicked field goals of 29 and 42 yards to give the Blue a 13-0 advantage at the 3:45 mark of the third quarter.
The Gold?s lone score came on a 34-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Joe Flacco (Audubon, N.J./Audubon) to sophomore receiver Terrell Allen (Wellford, S.C./James F. Byrnes) with 4:48 left in the scrimmage. Allen was the game?s leading receiver with four catches for 57 yards.
In the highly scrutinized quarterback competition, junior Luke Getsy (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) completed 7-of-10 passes for 36 yards, while junior Tyler Palko (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) was 6 of 13 for 49 yards and an interception. Flacco was 10 of 18 for 91 yards with the lone TD and an interception.
At the conclusion of the scrimmage, the annual spring awards were announced. The winners of the Ed Conway Award, annually presented to the team?s most improved players, were senior fullback Tim Murphy (Akron, Ohio/Buchtel), sophomore offensive lineman Mike McGlynn (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch), junior defensive end Charles Sallet (Tampa, Fla./Armwood) and sophomore linebacker Clint Session (Pompano Beach, Fla./Blanche Ely).
The first-ever Billy Gaines Award was also announced. Awarded to the player who best captures Gaines? spirit of determination, perseverance and courage, senior defensive lineman Vince Crochunis (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./ Schuylkill Haven) was named the inaugural recipient.
