Pittsburgh Signs Eight-Year Football Deal with Notre Dame

The 2005 game will be a nationally televised season opener.

      The series that produced such classic football moments as Tony Dorsett?s 303-yard rushing performance and the dramatic final game at Pitt Stadium will continue well into the next decade with the signing of a new agreement between Pittsburgh and Notre Dame.

      The Panthers and Irish will meet eight times between 2008 and 2015. The initial game of the series will be played at Notre Dame with the ?09 meeting taking place in Pittsburgh. The series will rotate between South Bend and Pittsburgh every year for the balance of the agreement.

      Pittsburgh and Notre Dame will meet each of the next two seasons, including this Saturday, Nov. 13, in South Bend, before the renewal of the series in ?08.

      In addition to the new agreement, the two schools announced that next year?s game will be played on Sept. 3 and serve as the season opener for both teams. It will be a nationally televised game by a network to be determined.

      The Panthers and Irish have played 61 times since 1909. Notre Dame is Pittsburgh?s third-most common opponent all-time, trailing only the West Virginia and Penn State series, which have been played 96 times each.

      ?The University of Pittsburgh and Notre Dame have a rich history on the football field,? Pittsburgh athletic director Jeff Long said. ?We are very pleased to continue a traditional series with roots that date back to the early 1900s. It?s a rivalry both Pittsburgh and Notre Dame fans, as well as college football fans in general, will be excited about for years to come.?
