Pittsburgh Cross Country Begins Successful Season at Duquesne Invitational

The women's team finishes 9-0, while the men finish 5-3.
PITTSBURGH?The men?s and women?s cross country team competed in its first meet of the 2003 season at the Duquesne Invitational this Saturday held in Schenley Park. The men?s team finished 5-3, while the women shut out all teams 9-0. Teams competing included University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne, St. Francis (Pa.), St. Bonaventure, Robert Morris, Carnegie Mellon, Wheeling Jesuit, West Virginia, Clarion and Penn State-Altoona.
Junior Maureen McCandless (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy) finished second with an impressive time of 17:46. Junior Lauren Shaffer (Imperial, Pa/West Allegheny) and senior Rachel Rothe (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) were close behind, placing third and fifth with times of 18:20 and 18:23, respectively.
Freshman Suzy Bossart (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg-Salem) finished eighth with a time of 18:49 and sophomore Nikki Angstadt (Kutztown, Pa/Fleetwood), who rounds out the top five Panther finishes, placed 12th with a time of 19:11.
Leading the way for the men were freshmen Michael Long (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North), who placed eighth (21:56) and Andrew Thomaswick (Natrona Heights, Pa./Highlands), who placed ninth (21:57). Freshman Jesse Mang (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) finished in the top twenty with a time of 22:12.
The Panthers next competition is September 27 at the Iona Meet of Champions in Van Cortland Park, New York.
