Biographies for the 2003 Football Recruiting Class
2/5/2003
PITTSBURGH -After enjoying its most successful season in two decades with nine victories and a spot in the final national polls, the University of Pittsburgh football team?s momentum continued today with the signing of a 25-member recruiting class.
"We believe we are an emerging program on the national level and we?re pleased about luring recruits from nine different states this year," said Pittsburgh head coach Walt Harris, who directed the Panthers to a 9-4 mark and No. 18 national ranking last season. "This class is going to be a vital cog in what we believe will be an exciting future for University of Pittsburgh football."
Three WPIAL standouts signed with the Panthers, including running back Windell Brown (Duquesne, Pa./Duquesne), linebacker Chris McKillop (Export, Pa./Kiski Area) and fullback Mark Yezovich (North Braddock, Pa./Woodland Hills).
Brown rushed for over 2,000 yards and scored an incredible 41 touchdowns as a senior in earning first-team All-Pennsylvania honors. Yezovich was a second-team all-state pick after helping Woodland Hills to the PIAA Class AAAA championship game. He rushed for nearly 600 yards and collected 117 tackles. McKillop is considered one of Pennsylvania?s top prospects despite playing in only five games due to injury. Another key in-state pickup was defensive end Kyle Smith (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek), one of Pennsylvania?s top defensive line prospects.
Pittsburgh lured nine prospects from the neighboring state of Ohio, including all-state selections in defensive back Mike Phillips (Warren, Ohio/Warren Harding), offensive lineman Zach Slates (Massillon,Ohio/Massillon Perry) and offensive lineman Chris Vangas (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne). Additionally, the Panthers inked the state?s top kicking prospect in Adam Graessle (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman), who averaged 43.9 yards per punt as a senior.
The southeast proved fertile recruiting ground for Pittsburgh this year. Six prospects from Florida signed with the Panthers, highlighted by all-state linebackers H.B. Blades (Plantation, Fla./Plantation) and Clint Session (Pompano Beach, Fla./Ely). Also from the southeast region is receiver Terrell Allen (Wellford, S.C./James Byrnes), a SuperPrep All-American.
In breaking the recruits down by position, the Panthers signed five linebackers, five offensive linemen, four receivers, four defensive backs, two defensive ends, two fullbacks, one running back, one quarterback and one punter.
Geographically, the class breakdown is as follows: Florida (six), Maryland (one), New Jersey (one), Ohio (nine), Pennsylvania (four), Rhode Island (one), South Carolina (one), Texas (one) and Virginia (one).
