Men's Soccer Drops 4-1 Decision to Connecticut
9/21/2002
PITTSBURGH ? The Pittsburgh Men?s Soccer team suffered a 4-1 loss against the University of Connecticut Huskies. The loss drops Pitt?s record to 5-2-0 while Connecticut is now 4-2-0 overall.
The University of Connecticut came out strong scoring in the third minute of play. After a restart, a ball deflected off the foot of Cesar Cuellar, finding its way to Damani Ralph who deposited it into the net.
Pitt bounced back with an offensive surge that resulted in a Nate Montgomery goal.
This would be the Panthers only goal of the game. Pitt was unsuccessful in their attempt to control the pace of the game after their lone score.
U Conn retaliated two minutes later when Damani Ralph slid the ball through to teamate Leandro de Oliveira who netted Connecticut?s second goal.
It was a physical battle between both teams. Pitt recorded 26 fouls and three yellow cards while U Conn committed 21 fouls and one yellow card.
The Huskies scored a third goal at the end of the first half when Anthony Curtis passed the ball across the face of the net, putting Cesar Cuellar in perfect scoring positon. Cuellar blasted the back of the net with a powerful bicycle kick.
Scoring action in the second half was limited. Pitt fouled a Husky inside the goal box allowing for a penalty kick. Cesar Cuellar found the back of the net again when he delivered the ball into the upper right corner.
The Panther?s look to rebound from this stunning defeat when they meet St. Francis (PA) on September 25 at St. Francis (PA).
