Brandin Knight Named Associated Press All-American
3/13/2002
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh point guard Brandin Knight, who has helped the Panther basketball team to a school-record 27 wins and their first NCAA Tournament berth since 1993, has been selected a third-team All-American by The Associated Press.
Knight, a 6-0 junior from East Orange, N.J., is the only Big East player represented on the list. He is the first Pittsburgh player to receive the honor since Jerome Lane was named a second team All-American in 1988.
This is the latest honor for Knight who recently was named the Big East's Co-Player of the Year and the conference's Most Improved Player. He was also selected first team All-Big East and named to the Big East's All-Tournament team following Pittsburgh's berth in the championship's title game for the second straight season.
Knight, who leads Pittsburgh with 15.6 points and 7.2 assists per game, has helped the Panthers to a 27-5 overall record and the Big East's West Division title with a 13-3 conference mark. He ranks second in the conference in both assists (7.2 apg.) and assist/turnover ratio (2.22).
With 229 assists this year, Knight has tied Darelle Porter (1989-90) for Pittsburgh's single-season assist record. He is also ranked third in Panther annals for both career assists (554) and steals (222). In the Panthers' win over Miami in the Big East Tournament last week, Knight became the 28th Pittsburgh player to record 1,000 points. Entering the NCAA Tournament, Knight has 1,024 points to rank 27th all-time.
Pittsburgh will face Central Connecticut State (27-4) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, March 15. Tip-off is set for 12:25 p.m. at Mellon Arena.
