PITTSBURGH (AP) - Brandin Knight made four 3-point shots to spark a 17-7 run at the start of the second half and lead Pittsburgh to a 70-65 victory against Seton Hall Thursday night in Big East action.
Knight finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. He scored 13 points in the second half. Pittsburgh is 20-4 overall, 8-3 in the Big East. It is the first 20-victory season for the Panthers since the 1990-91 season when they finished 21-12. The school record for wins in a season is 25.
Seton Hall (11-11, 4-6) made things interesting in the final minute when it pulled to within 69-65 on a jumper by Desmond Herod with 13 seconds left and then stole a pass. The shot was originally ruled a 3-pointer but officials changed the ruling during a time out.
Ty Shine took a 3-pointer for Seton Hall with 10 seconds left but missed and Chad Johnson grabbed the rebound for Pitt to secure the victory. Shine paced the Pirates with 15 points.
The outburst at the start of the second half gave Pitt a 49-30 lead with 13:34 remaining. Seton Hall got hot after that and scored 10 consecutive points to pull to within 58-53 with 6:34 left to play.
Jaron Brown, who scored 13 points, stopped the bleeding for Pitt with two free throws at 6:12 and Ontario Lett, who had 10 points and 10 rebounds, put in a layup a minute later. Following a steal by Knight, Lett worked free for another easy shot and the Panthers lead was 64-53 at 4:55.
The Panthers closed out the first half with five points on a layup off a rebound by Brown and a 3-pointer by Julius Page with three seconds left to give Pitt a 32-23 lead at the half.
