David Abdul Earns National Freshman of the Week Honor

University of Pittsburgh freshman placekicker David Abdul has been named the Rivals.com Freshman of the Week for his performance in the Panthers? 19-16 overtime victory over Boston College Oct. 26.
The Rivals.com Freshman Player of the Week honor is awarded to the nation?s top performing true or redshirt freshman each week of the regular season. Abdul also was honored as the Big East Co-Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts versus the Eagles.
Abdul (Hartville, Ohio/Massillon Washington) accounted for 13 points in the Boston College victory, converting 4-of-4 field goals and his lone extra-point attempt. He tied Pittsburgh and Big East records with his four field goals, which included the game-winning 42-yard kick in overtime. Abdul also converted from 30 yards out to tie the game with five seconds left in regulation.
Abdul leads the Big East with a 68.8 percent field goal conversion rate (11 of 16) and has a team-high 44 points. He has hit nine consecutive field goals, dating back to the Sept. 28 Toledo game.
The Panthers (6-2, 3-0 Big East), who have won 12 of their last 14 games, play at No. 3 Virginia Tech this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The game will be nationally televised by ESPN 2. The Hokies are 8-0 overall and 3-0 in Big East play. Pittsburgh defeated Virginia Tech, 38-7, at Heinz Field last year.
