PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh's highly regarded 2001 football recruiting class has added another promising prospect. Woodly Telfort, a 6-6, 320-pound offensive lineman from Miami, Fla., has signed to play for the Panthers this fall.
A three-year starter at offensive tackle, Telfort enjoyed an exceptional career at North Miami High. He was a three-time All-District selection and two-time All-Conference honoree. Telfort additionally was All-South Florida as a senior and played in the prestigious Dade-Broward County All-Star Game.
"Upgrading our offensive line has been a priority since we arrived at Pittsburgh four years ago," said Head Coach Walt Harris. "The addition of Woodly Telfort continues that emphasis and we are excited about signing him. We watched film of Woodly playing in the Dade-Broward County All-Star game and came away really impressed. He has great size and great potential."
Telfort's signing gives Pittsburgh 24 recruits this year, including four from the talent-rich state of Florida. The Panthers' additional signees from the state include receiver Roosevelt Bynes (Sunrise, Fla./Piper), running back Darren Felder (St. Petersburg, Fla./Lakewood Senior) and receiver Joe Stephens (Tampa, Fla./Armwood).
In breaking down Pittsburgh's 2001 signees by position, the Panthers inked six running backs, five defensive linemen, four wide receivers, two defensive backs, three linebackers, three offensive linemen and one tight end.
Pittsburgh will hold spring drills from March 13 through April 7 at the UPMC Sports Performance Complex. It opens the 2001 season in its new home - the city's new North Shore football stadium - against East Tennessee State Sept. 1.
