Ten Panthers Named To Academic Football Team

PITTSBURGH - Ten University of Pittsburgh football players have been selected to the Big East All- Academic Football Team for outstanding academic and athletic performance.
Pittsburgh selections include linebacker Brian Beinecke (Youngstown, Ohio/Liberty), offensive lineman Mark Browne (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Dana Hills), wide receiver Chris Curd (Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline), linebacker Brian Guzek (Library, Pa./South Park), defensive lineman Dan LaCarte (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi Area), kicker Nick Lotz (Findlay, Ohio/Findlay), offensive lineman Joe Manganello (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum), linebacker Kody Miller (Anaheim, Calif./Canyon), defensive back Mark Ponko (Delmont, Pa./Franklin Regional) and offensive lineman Chad Reed (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe).
Big East All-Academic Football Team members must be letterwinners who have posted a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher and completed a minimum of two semesters of academic work.
Ponko, a sophomore business major, earned his third consecutive berth on the Big East All- Academic Team. Beinecke, a sophomore movement science major, Lotz, a junior who majors in finance, and Manganello, a sophomore civil engineering major, are all two-time honorees.
Pittsburgh?s 10 honorees tied for the most in the conference with Boston College, Miami, Syracuse and West Virginia.
