Women's Swimming Places Sixth at Big East Championships

The Pittsburgh women's swimming and diving team placed sixth at the 2001 Big East Championships in Uniondale, N.Y. over the weekend. The Panthers posted a score of 346 points behind champion Notre Dame (672.5). Also rounding out the top five were Virginia Tech (2nd-482), Rutgers (3rd-450.5), Villanova (4th-406) and Miami (5th-391.5).
The 200-yard medley relay team of Carolyne Savini (Egg Harbour Township, N.J./Holy Spirit), Ryan Redman (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills), Kelli Tielking (Damascus, Md./Damascus) and Katie Hunter (Warren, Pa./Warren Area) had the best finish of the meet for the Panthers as they placed second with a time of 1:43.42. The foursome also teamed up to claim fourth place in the 400 medley relay in 3:48.73. Additionally, Hunter, Jenny Livingstone (Endwell, N.U./Union-Endicott), Amanda Lyle (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) and Lindsay Weaverling (Lansing, Kan./Leavenworth) combined to place fourth in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:34.27.
Individually, the Panthers had a number of top-five finishes. Sophomore Emily Colley (Pace, Fla./Pace) placed third in the 1,650 free with a time of 16:41.82. Savini, a freshman, claimed a fourth-place finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.84, and a fifth-place spot in the 200 individual medley in 2:05.12. Redman finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.12), while fellow freshman Jen O'Brien (Verona, Pa./Penn Hills) placed third on the one-meter diving board with a score of 286.20.
