EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Ricardo Greer scored 19 points and Pittsburgh held Seton Hall to one field goal over the final 15 minutes in a 68-61 victory Thursday night.
The Panthers (13-11, 5-8 Big East) took the lead for good at 40-39 on a 3-pointer by Greer with 18:27 to play. Seton Hall (12-10, 3-8) was never able to mount any kind of challenge, finishing with five field goals in the second half, four in the opening five minutes.
Pitt snapped a four-game losing streak, while Seton Hall lost its fifth straight game.
Pitt freshman center Toree Morris had 10 points and 10 rebounds in his first college start, replacing Isaac Hawkins, who missed the game with a foot injury. Hawkins, a senior, averages 9.3 points and 7.8 rebounds, while Morris came in with averages of 1.9 points and 2.0 rebounds.
Eddie Griffin had 21 points on 7-for-18 shooting for the Pirates, who play their next two games on the road - No. 14 Notre Dame and Rutgers. They are 1-6 on the road this season, one that started with them ranked No. 10 and could end with them failing to qualify for the Big East tournament.
The last team in each of the seven-team divisions of the Big East will not go to New York for the tournament and Seton Hall is now one game ahead of last-place Rutgers (2-9).
Brandin Knight had 12 points and five assists for Pittsburgh, which beat Seton Hall 77-65 on Jan. 13, the first loss in what has become a stretch of seven in eight games for the Pirates.
Darius Lane added 16 points for Seton Hall and was 4-for-12 from 3-point range as the Pirates finished 7-for-27 from beyond the arc.
Seton Hall was 5-for-24 from the field in the second half and missed 12 straight shots from Ty Shine's jumper with 15:00 left until Griffin hit a 3 with 1:31 to play that brought the Pirates within 61-56.
