Pittsburgh Swimming and Diving Claims Two More Victories

The Pittsburgh men's swimming and diving team claimed two victories over the weekend, defeating Maryland, 139-104, on Jan. 19, and Big East Conference foe Villanova, 164-60, on Jan. 20.
The Panthers visited the Terrapins and claimed six individual events and relay. Sophomore Mike Grube (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) placed first in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles with times of 20.50 and 45.37, respectively. Junior divers Michael Wells (Downingtown, Pa./Downtingtown) and Blair Beal (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) claimed the top two spots, repspectively, on both the one- and three-meter diving boards.
Junior Will Eden (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) won the 400 individual medley, posting a time of 4:03.48, and fellow junior Max von Bodungen (Malmo, Sweden/Borgarskolan) earned a first-place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:40.36. Additionally, freshman Randy Gertenbach (El Centro, Calif./Paradise Valley) grabbed the top spot in the 100 breaststroke (58.04), while the 200 free relay team of von Bodungen, Adam Webber (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest), Miah Heath (Estes Park, Colo./Estes Colo.) and Grube finished first in 1:22.42.
Pittsburgh then visited the Wildcats on Jan. 20 and claimed all but three events in the meet. Grube (200 free), von Bodungen (1000 free), Eden (200 IM) and Beal (three-meter diving) claimed first place in their respective events for the season straight day. Junior Michael Demos (McKeesport, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) earned his first collegiate dual meet victory by finishing first in the 50 free (21.22), while senior Patrick Shedlock (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) claimed the top spot in the 100 butterfly (52.26). In addition, freshman Eric Drummond (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) placed first in 100 backstroke (53.67) and Webber was first in the 100 free (47.18).
The Panthers improve to 8-2 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the Big East. Pittsburgh will host conference foe Virginia Tech on Saturday, Jan. 27 at Trees Pool (11 a.m.).
