PITTSBURGH -- Coming off its most successful season in more than a decade, the University of Pittsburgh football team will face a 2001 schedule that features nine opponents that posted winning records last year, including five bowl teams.
The 11-game schedule, announced by Athletic Director Steve Pederson today, will include six contests at the new home of the Panthers - the city's North Shore football stadium - which will witness its first season of play this fall.
Highlighting the home slate will be games with Big East opponents Virginia Tech (Nov. 3) and Syracuse (Oct. 13) as well as a Thursday night showdown with Miami (Sept. 27), which will be played before a national ESPN television audience.
Pittsburgh's game with Miami will mark the Panthers' eighth appearance on ESPN's Thursday night package, the most of any Big East school. The Panthers last hosted Miami on Thursday night in 1997 when Pittsburgh upset the Hurricanes, 21-17, en route to the Liberty Bowl.
The Panthers open the season Sept. 1 by hosting East Tennessee State. Other home opponents include South Florida (Sept. 8) and Alabama-Birmingham (Sept. 15), which upset bowl teams in Louisiana State and East Carolina last season.
Pittsburgh will play at Notre Dame on Oct. 6 in the first meeting between the two schools since 1999 when the Panthers defeated the Irish, 37-27, in the final game ever played at Pitt Stadium. It will also be Pittsburgh's first trip to South Bend since the 1996 season.
Other road games include Big East foes Boston College (Oct. 20), Temple (Oct. 27), Rutgers (Nov. 10) and the traditional season finale with West Virginia (Nov. 24).
