ORLANDO, Fla. - University of Pittsburgh wideout Antonio Bryant has been selected as the recipient of the 2000 Fred Biletnikoff Award, presented annually to the nation's top wide receiver. He is the second sophomore (Randy Moss, 1997) to win the award in its history.
Bryant, a 6-2, 180-pound sophomore from Miami, Fla., was given the Trophy at the Home Depot ESPN College Football Awards Show at Disney's Atlantic Dance Hall in Orlando on December 7. Bryant was recently named to the FWAA All-America team and has also been recognized by The Sporting News and Football News. He shared the 2000 BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year award, as well as making the All-BIG EAST First Team. He is the first player in Panther and BIG EAST history to win the Biletnikoff Award.
Bryant leads the nation in receiving with 130.2 yards per game. He established a BIG EAST single-season record for receiving yards with 1,302, surpassing the mark set by former SU and current Indianapolis Colts' standout Marvin Harrison (1,131 yards). Bryant was also first in the conference and 17th nationally in all-purpose yards with a 148.0-yard average.
Candidates for the 2000 Biletnikoff Award must be an active collegiate receiver at a NCAA Division I-A college or university. Other factors that may be considered during the voting process include the quality of the candidates. opposing teams as well as the leadership, self-discipline and desire displayed by candidates both on and off the field.
