1/14/2000
PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh gymnastics team opened its 2000 season with a victory over James Madison, 191.475-182.850, tonight at Fitzgerald Field House. The Panthers' team score of 191.475 was the highest to open a season in school history.
Pittsburgh dominated all four events, sweeping the top three places in all but floor exercise. Leading the way for the Panthers was senior Lisa Fronhofer (Salem, N.Y./Salem) who placed first on three events, including vault (9.650), balance beam (9.675) and floor (9.825). Sophomore Becky Singleton (Poland, Ohio/Boardman) was second on beam with a 9.50.
Fellow senior Samantha Salyers (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West), Pittsburgh's school record holder on the uneven bars, claimed first place on that event with a 9.90. She has scored a 9.90 four other times in her career, placing her fifth on the all-time top ten list. Senior Danielle "Freddie" Alba (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) finished second behind Salyers on bars with a 9.80.
The Panther freshman made an impact in just the first meet of their careers. Nathalie Sulpher (Ottawa, Canada/Franco-Quest) placed second on vault (9.625) and third on both bars (9.65) and floor (9.725), while Jennifer Easter (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) finished third on vault (9.575) and beam (9.475). Heather Launse (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) also competed in the starting lineup for Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh (1-0/0-0 EAGL) travels to Kent on Jan. 21 for a dual meet competition.
