Women's Soccer Finishes 1-1 At Fila Invitational
9/13/1999
PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh women's soccer team competed in the Fila Invitational hosted by Maryland last week. The Panthers took on Pennsylvania on Sept. 10 and defeated the Quakers, 1-0. Freshman forward Kirstin Gellatly (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) scored on a penalty kick with 4:42 left in regulation to give Pittsburgh the victory. Junior goalkeeper Nicole Bashor (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) made five saves to preserve her second shutout of the season. Gellatly and senior midfielder Megan Beasley (Longmont, Colo./Longmont) recorded two shots each, accounting for four of the Panthers' eight shots on goal.
Gellatly, who leads the team in scoring (six points), netted her second goal of the tournament as Pittsburgh fell to 24th-ranked Baylor, 3-1, on Sept. 12. Gellatly's goal tied the score, 1-1, at the 37:09 mark. Sophomore forward Cande Ruiz (Oxnard, Calif./Santa Clara) assisted on the goal, making a cross to Gellatly who put the ball in to the open net. Ruiz saw her first action of the season during tournament games after suffering a sprained medial cruciate ligament.
The Bears dominated the game, recording 20 shots to the Panthers' six. Baylor's Nikki Hales secured the win with two second-half goals for the final score. The Bears also defeated Maryland earlier in the weekend, 4-0, to claim the tournament title.
Pittsburgh (2-2) visits Hartford on Friday, Sept. 17. The Panthers begin Big East Conference play when they travel to St. John's Sunday, Sept. 19.
