Wrestling Squad Takes Down Cleveland State

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Panther wrestling team, ranked 25th in the country, defeated Eastern Wrestling League opponent Cleveland State tonight, 24-11, at Fitzgerald Field House. The Panthers improve to 7-1-1 overall, 2-0 in the league.
Pittsburgh began the scoring at 197 pounds with a 12-4 major decision by freshman Dan Stine (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) over Cleveland State's John Cole. It was Stine's eighth-straight dual match victory. He is currently 27-8 overall and leads the teams in wins and majors (7).
Junior heavyweight Matt Mueller (North Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) followed up with a 5-1 decision over the Vikings' Brian Criddle to make the score 7-0 after two bouts. Cleveland State won the 125- pound weight class before sophomore Panther Shawn Amistade (Washington, Pa./Trinity) improved his dual record to a perfect 7-0 with a 17-5 major decision.
Pittsburgh lost at 141 pounds but then won four straight bouts. Senior Chad Jesko (Dunbar, Pa./Connellsville) won his sixth major decision of the year at 149 pounds over Juan Miller with a score of 9-1. Jesko, 21-8 on the season, claimed his 100th career win earlier in the week, making him only the seventh Panther in wrestling history to do so.
Junior Mike Ziska (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) and senior Kevin Johnson (Centerville, Va./Chantilly) won decisions of 8-3 and 4-2 at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively, before 11th-ranked Nick Mengerink (Upper Sanduskey, Ohio/Carey) completed the scoring for Pittsburgh with a 4-0 decision over Cleveland State's Josh Smith. The Vikings' Josh Didion won the last bout of the match to make the score 24- 11.
The Panthers return to the mat Friday, Jan. 29, when they host EWL opponent Virgina Tech at 7:30 p.m. They then host cross-town rival Duquesne on Sunday, Jan. 31 at 1 p.m.
