PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh Varsity Letter Club will host the first annual Bobby Lewis Memorial Golf Outing Friday, April 23, at the Lindenwood Golf Course. The event, in honor of the late Pittsburgh Panthers' baseball coach, will benefit the Bobby Lewis Baseball Scholarship Fund.
On Saturday, April 24, there will be a tailgate event at 11 a.m. prior to the Panthers' noon doubleheader against Boston College at Trees Field.
Lewis, who served in many capacities during his 38-year tenure at the University of Pittsburgh before his retirement in January 1993, is best known for his 36-year term as the Panthers' baseball coach. He compiled a 438-389 overall record and produced several players who went on to professional baseball careers, including George "Doc" Medich and Ken Macha. Lewis's 438 wins are the most by any coach in school history.
In addition to coaching, Lewis served 10 years as program coordinator for men's varsity sports and also was a faculty member in the University's Health, Physical Education and Recreational Department of the School of Education.
Lewis was a 1952 graduate of Pittsburgh, earning his bachelor of science degree in physical education. He was a center fielder on the Panther baseball team and three-year letterwinner. After a tour in the United States Marine Corps, Lewis returned to Pitt as the head baseball coach. He earned his master's degree from the university in 1961.
