PITTSBURGH - University of Pittsburgh head men's swimming coach Chuck Knoles has announced the signing of Mike Grube to a national letter-of-intent. Grube will join the Panthers, who claimed their 14th Big East Championship, for the 1999-2000 season.
"It is my belief that Mike Grube will be one of the most successful freshman collegiate sprinters in the country," said Knoles. "His impact on the team will be felt immediately."
Grube, a native of Drexel Hill, Pa., is a four-year letterwinner and won two state championships in 1999 in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles. His time of 20.33 in the 50 free was a PIAA high school and Penn State University pool record. Grube also broke a northeast national record in the 100 free at the 1999 USA Swimming Junior Championships Northeast, holds 11 out of 12 school records at Upper Darby High School, and is a two-time district champion and record holder.
Additionally, Grube is a multi-time All-Central, All-District, All-Delco, All-State and All- American swimmer, as well as a four-year MVP and a 1999 Central Pennsylvania Co-Swimmer of the Year.
A multi-sport athlete, Grube has also had outstanding succes in both cross country and track. In addition to being a four-time letterwinner in each, he is a two-time state qualifier and an All-District honoree.
Grube has succeeded in the classroom as well, graduating with a 3.65 grade point average. A National Honors Society student, he has been honored by District 7 Congressman Curt Weldon and named the Scholar-Athlete of 1999.
Grube will join his sister Beth, a junior on the women's swimming and diving team, at Pittsburgh.
