PITTSBURGH -- With two second-half goals, 18th-ranked St. John's shut out the Pittsburgh Panther men's soccer team, 2-0, today at Pitt Stadium. The Panthers fall to 4-6-2 overall and remain winless in the Big East Conference (0-5-1).
Pittsburgh was able to hold the Red Storm scoreless in the first half, but at the 48:58 mark, forward Medufia Kulego connected for a goal, lobbing the ball over Panther keeper Justin Gaul's (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./William Tennent) outstretched hands. Seven minutes later, St. John's midfielder Jeff Matteo took two quick passes in front of the goal, placing it in the left side of the net for the Red Storm's second goal of the afternoon.
St. John's held a 14-3 shot advantage over Pittsburgh. Forward Ocar Arauz came in off the bench for the Red Storm and recorded a team-leading four shots. Freshman Bryan Hopper (North Versailes, Pa./East Allegheny), junior Ben Garry (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) and senior Reagan Bender (Willow Street, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) each had one shot for the Panthers.
Pittsburgh returns to action this Friday, Oct. 15, when the Panthers host Rutgers in a Big East matchup. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Pitt Stadium.
