BLACKSBURG, Va. - Jim Druckenmiller hit Shawn Scales with scoring passes of seven and 71 yards 2:19 apart in the second half to lead Virginia Tech to a 34-17 victory over Pittsburgh in a Big East game.
Pittsburgh held a 17-13 lead in the third quarter when Druckenmiller connected with Scales on a seven-yard scoring play with 2:14 left in the third quarter. Druckenmiller then hit Scales with a 71-yard bomb nine seconds into the fourth quarter to increase Virginia Tech's lead to 27-17.
Ken Oxendine rushed for 111 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries for Virginia Tech (5-1, 4-1 Big East). Oxendine scored on a six-yard run in the first quarter and a one-yard run in the fourth.
Druckenmiller completed 10-of-20 passes for 191 yards. Scales had three catches for 95 yards and Marcus Parker added 84 yards on 12 carries.
Matt Lytle passed for a touchdown and ran for another for Pittsburgh (2-6, 1-4). He completed 14-of-34 passes for 152 yards and was intercepted twice.
Oxendine's six-yard touchdown run with 9:08 left in the first quarter gave Virginia Tech a 7-3 lead.
Lytle hit tailback Dwayne Schulters with a two-yard touchdown with 3:43 left in the second quarter to put Pittsburgh up, 10-7.
Brian Edmonds scored on a one-yard run with 37 seconds left in the quarter to give Virginia Tech a 13-10 halftime advantage.
Lytle scored on a two-yard run with 6:15 remaining in the third quarter to give Pittsburgh a 17-13 lead.
Virginia Tech leads the all-time series, 4-0, with victories each of the last four years.
