Panthers Drop Final Regular Season Non-Conference Contest 5-1
COLUMBUS, Ohio – In the Panthers second non-conference contest of the week, the University of Pittsburgh softball team fell to Ohio State 5-1 Wednesday evening at Buckeye Field in Columbus, Ohio.
Pitt [29-17-1] struggled to produce offensively against the Buckeyes [33-11], recording just one run thanks to a sacrifice fly. Senior Giorgiana Zeremenko tallied the lone RBI of the evening with the sac fly in the fifth, bringing in senior Erin Hershman who doubled in the inning. Hershman accounted for one of just two hits by the Panthers, as junior Taylor Myers recording the other. Zeremenko reached base in two of her three appearances, earning walks in her first two takes at the plate.
In the circle, senior Kayla Harris recorded just her second loss of the season as she gave up five runs, four unearned, on six hits. The Chesapeake, Va., native struck out two.
Scoring Summary: Ohio State 5, Pitt 1
The home team struck in the opening inning of the game, as the Buckeyes used a two-out rally to take a 2-0 lead. After forcing two quick groundouts to start the bottom half of the frame, a single and a double set up runners on second and third for Ohio State. A ball to left field by freshman Niki Carver brought around the first run, while the runner from second was awarded home after an obstruction call on Zeremenko during a close play at the plate.
Following a scoreless second inning, the Buckeyes extended their lead in the bottom of the third on a solo shot by junior Emily Clark. Ohio State led 3-0.
The Panthers found a spark in the fifth inning, scoring a single run on a sac fly by Zeremenko. Hershman tagged up from third on Zeremenko's high fly ball to right field after reaching base on a double and advancing to third on a dropped fly ball in the at-bat prior. Pitt trailed 3-1 after five complete innings.
The Buckeyes added a few insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to a two-run long ball by Ashley Goodwin. Ohio State led 5-1 at the end of the sixth and held the Panthers scoreless in the seventh en route to the victory.
