Panthers Bats Come Alive in Non-Conference Victory.
PITTSBURGH – In non-conference action, the University of Pittsburgh softball team routed Kent State 14-4 Tuesday evening at Vartabedian Field in Pittsburgh.
The Panthers [29-16-1] offense propelled the squad to a five-inning victory, as they produced 14 runs on 11 hits to beat Kent State [26-20].
Nine players recorded hits in the game to put up a total of 11. Senior Erin Hershman and sophomore Kaitlyn Kruger led all action with two hits apiece in three at-bats. Hershman was responsible for four RBIs, three of which came from a long ball in the third inning that cleared the right center wall in addition to the soccer stadium bleachers that sits just beyond diamond. Kruger contributed to the output with two extra base hits, including a triple, and three runs batted in. Senior Mckayla Taylor also hit a home run to right center field in the bottom of the second inning. On defense, junior Gabrielle Fredericks was responsible for a team-leading six putouts, while Taylor finished with three assists.
In the circle, junior Sarah Dawson earned her 14th win of the season, giving up just two earned runs on seven hits in five innings tossed. The junior tallied five strikeouts in a split outing, as she returned to the game after being relieved by junior Taylor Rahach in the top of the fifth. Rahach struggled from the get-go, giving up a walk before allowing a home run, prompting the return of Dawson.
Scoring Summary: Pitt 14, Kent State 4 (Five Innings)
Pitt opened the game with four runs in the bottom of the first inning to get out to a hefty lead. Taylor scored the first run of the game following a series of interesting events. The senior walked to reach base and then scored on back-to-back wild pitches but in an unordinary situation, came home from second after she rounded third base and hustled home, as the Kent State catcher was unable to track down the wild pitch fast enough. Back-to-back walks to juniors Olivia Gray and Alexis Solak continued the frame, before bases became loaded as freshman Hunter Leveque singled to the outfield. Gray scored on the next at-bat, a sac fly by junior Taylor Myers, while Both Levesque and Solak came around on a triple by Kruger.
The Panthers extended their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the second inning as Taylor crushed a solo shot to right center.
Kent State struck in the top of the third with a two-run long ball to right center by Emily Dobbin, cutting Pitt's lead to three, 5-2.
The home team answered with five runs in the bottom half of the same frame to take a 10-2 lead. With one away, Myers walked before touching every base en route to home on Kruger's second extra-base hit of the day. Fredericks kept the inning going with a single through the right side to put two runners on for Hershman. The senior annihilated the first pitch of her second at-bat in the game, sending the ball over the right center wall as well as the clearing the soccer stadium bleachers. The inning didn't end there as Taylor and senior Giorgiana Zeremenko drew back-to-back walks to set up an RBI-single by Solak.
The Panthers tacked on their final runs of the game in the fourth, scoring four to extend its lead to 14-2. With Myers on second following a leadoff double to center, the junior scored after the Golden Flashes' pitcher overthrew first base on routine ground ball from Kruger. Marissa DeMatteo stepped to the plate next as a pinch hitter, filling in for Fredericks. The junior came up with a hit as she hit a hard hit ball back at the pitcher, advancing Kruger to third. Both runners came home Hershman's second hit of the game, a single through the right side, while she took third on back-and-forth throws in the field. Hershman counted as the final run for Pitt as she scored on a wild pitch.
Looking to close out the game in five innings, Rahach entered at the top of the fifth in relief. However, Dawson returned to the game as Rahach gave up a walk and a home run to bring the score to 14-4. Dawson gave up a single hit before forcing a double play for the first two outs of the inning, before handling a grounder back to the circle for the final out.
