PITTSBURGH – Head coach Jeff Capel announced the addition of Trey McGowens to Pitt's recruiting class as the Piedmont, S.C., native signed his National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Pittsburgh and play for the Panthers next season.
"We are excited to have Trey join our program," said Capel. "He is an explosive athlete with the ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor. Trey's competitiveness and work ethic will allow him to compete for playing time immediately. We look forward to watching him grow and develop on the court, in the classroom and in the community throughout his career. He is a terrific addition to our family."
McGowens, a soon-to-be Hargrave Military Academy graduate, was initially listed in the 2019 class, but has since reclassified to the 2018 class and will join the Panthers for the 2018-19 season. In his lone season at Hargrave, McGowens helped the Tigers to a 33-4 record and a No. 4 national ranking after averaging 18.4 points, 6.3 assists, 5.4 rebounds and 3.2 steals per game.
The 6-3 four-star combo guard spent his first three years at his hometown Wren High School before transferring to Hargrave Military Academy. He led the Hurricanes to the AAAA State Championship game while also earning Region 1 AAAA Player of the Year and first team all-state honors after averaging 18.3 points, 6.8 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 3.6 steals per game during the 2016-17 season.
McGowens is rated as the fifth-best prospect in the state of Virginia and the 88th ranked recruit in the nation by 247Sports. He jumped to No. 80 in the Rivals Class of 2018 rankings upon his reclassification. McGowens received offers from more than 40 Division I institutions including Clemson, Connecticut, Georgia Tech, Kansas State and Marquette before deciding on Pitt.
McGowens is Pitt's highest rated recruit (according to Rivals rankings) since Steven Adams (No. 5) and James Robinson (No. 59) in 2012. He is the Panthers' first Rivals Top 100 commitment since Damon Wilson (No. 100) in 2015.
Pitt will once again play a challenging slate of games, particularly in conference play. The Atlantic Coast Conference announced conference pairings for the 2018-19 season Tuesday, April 10 with Pitt playing Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Louisville, NC State, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Syracuse and Virginia Tech at the Petersen Events Center. The Panthers' road slate will feature trips to Boston College, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, NC State, Syracuse, Virginia and Wake Forest.
Pitt's non-conference schedule as well as dates, times and TV designations will be released at a later date.
Season tickets go on sale Tuesday, May 8 and can be purchased by calling the Panthers Ticket Office at 1-800-643-7488 or online at PittsburghPanthers.com/tickets. In early April, Pitt announced season ticket price restructuring for the 2018-19 season that has created reduced pricing in nearly every location of the Petersen Events Center.
Pitt will reduce membership costs related to ticket sales in response to recent federal tax legislation. Effective Jan. 1, 2018, payments made to fulfill priority seating and parking opportunities are no longer tax deductible. While no longer tax deductible, these scholarship-seating payments will continue to be utilized to support the academic and athletic needs of our student-athletes and Panther Club members will continue to receive other great benefits.
