Pitt Ends Florida State’s 36-Game ACC Win Streak After Game Two Victory.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team used a 1-0 extra-inning victory to hand No. 13/9 Florida State its first Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) loss of the season and snap the Seminoles 36-game conference win streak dating back to the 2016 season. The victory also marked the Panthers' first in program history against the Seminoles.
Â
Pitt [20-14-1, 9-4 ACC] split its doubleheader against Florida State [32-7, 10-1 ACC], dropping game one 2-1 after a walk-off by the Seminoles before earning a 1-0 extra-inning victory in game two.
Â
Junior Sarah Dawson got the start in game one for the Panthers. Though she took the loss, Dawson had a strong showing for Pitt in its series opener against the Seminoles. Through 6.1 innings of play, the junior allowed eight hits while giving up just two runs.
Â
Senior Kayla Harris took the mound for game two, where she earned her eighth win of the season with a complete game shutout. In eight innings on the mound, Harris allowed nine hits while striking out two. The complete game marked her team-high eighth of the season.
Â
At the plate, freshman Hunter Levesque led the Panthers in game one, collecting both of Pitt's hits and its lone run of the game.
Â
In game two, junior Olivia Gray recorded the Panthers lone multi-hit effort of the night, going 2-for-4 while adding an RBI. Gray also displayed her defensive chops in game two, coming up with a clutch do-it-yourself double play in the bottom of the eighth to help secure the victory for Pitt.
Â
Game One Scoring Summary: Florida State 2, Pitt 1
The Panthers were the first to get on the board in game one. Levesque led off the sixth inning with a single through the left side of the field. Following that, senior Erin Hershman laid down a bunt to the third base side, which led to a throwing error at first, scoring Levesque and giving Pitt a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Panthers remained out in front, 1-0, heading into the bottom of the seventh, though the Seminoles answered in dramatic fashion to finish the game. A walk started the inning, followed by a hit down the left field line that ended with runners on second and third. Florida State's Sydney Sherrill then roped a line drive to left center, sending in both of the Seminoles' base runners and giving FSU the 2-1 walk-off win.
Â
Game Two Scoring Summary: Pitt 1, Florida State 0 (8)
Game two was another low scoring affair, with a pitching duel yet again ensuing between the Panthers and Seminoles. Both teams went scoreless through seven innings, though Pitt had to avoid a big scare to get to that point, escaping a no-out bases loaded situation in the bottom of the seventh after two strikeouts by Harris and a pop out to short.
Â
In the top of the eighth, junior Marissa DeMatteo roped a leadoff single to center field to start things off for the Panthers. The Seminoles then recorded two consecutive outs, bringing senior Giorgiana Zeremenko to the plate with a runner on first and two down. Zeremenko stepped up with a big-time single to right field, advancing DeMatteo to third. Gray then sent a single to right field to bring home DeMatteo, giving the Panthers the eventual 1-0 victory.
