Freshman Hunter Levesque Comes Up Clutch in the Seventh
PITTSBURGH – With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, freshman Hunter Levesque came up clutch with a walkoff RBI-single to propel the University of Pittsburgh softball team past Virginia 3-2 in game two of the series at Vartabedian Field in Pittsburgh, Pa.
With its second win over the Cavaliers [12-34, 3-17 ACC], the Panthers [25-16-1, 13-6 ACC] earned its seventh series victory of the season.
After a two run shot by senior Giorgiana Zeremenko in the first that put Pitt out in front, Virginia tied the game thanks to two home runs, one in the fourth and one in the fifth. In the final two frames, the Panthers defense stepped up, turning a double play in each to get out of potential UVA scoring situations, which allowed Pitt to find a way to push a run across in the final inning.
Hunter Levesque was the clutch hero in the seventh as the freshman roped a ball to deep left field, driving in the winning run from second. Scoring the go-ahead run was freshman Morgan Batesole, who pinch ran for Zeremenko. Zeremenko singled in the leadoff spot in the frame for her second hit of the day, while junior Olivia Gray also came up huge by dropping a perfectly placed sac bunt to push Zeremenko in to scoring position.
Shining in the circle for the Panthers were both senior Kayla Harris and junior Sarah Dawson. Earning the start for Pitt was Harris, who held Virginia to just three hits, including the two home runs, through five innings of play. Dawson relieved Harris in the top of the sixth, closing out the final two frames. Dawson held the Cavalier scoreless, allowing just two hits in seven batters faced.
Scoring Summary: Pitt 3, Virginia 2
With her 14th long ball of the season and 45th of her career, Zeremenko put Pitt out in front 2-0 in the first inning. A two run shot, the senior brought in senior McKayla Taylor after she drew a four-ball walk to lead off the inning.
After back-to-back scoreless frames, Virginia tied the ball game 2-2 with two solo home runs, one in the fourth inning and one in the fifth. The first came from junior Olivia Gott, who posted her third home run of the weekend. The second was off the bat of leadoff hitter Erika Osherow.
A walkoff RBI-single by Levesque in the final inning of play was what it took the Panthers to push past the Cavaliers. It began with a single from Zeremenko, who advanced to second on a sac bunt by Gray. Looking to add speed on the base paths, Zeremenko was replaced on second with Batesole, who crossed home plate on a rip to left field by Levesque.
