Panthers Take the Series from the Yellow Jackets 2-1
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh softball team earned its fifth Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) series win of the season after earning a 6-2 victory in its rubber match against Georgia Tech. The Panthers' win was their second of the series after splitting their doubleheader with the Yellow Jackets Friday.
Pitt [22-16-1, 11-6 ACC] earned the game-three victory over Georgia Tech [22-20, 8-7 ACC] in large part due to a strong day at the plate, as two Panther bombs were responsible for half of the teams runs.
Freshman Hunter Levesque went 2-for-3 on the day while adding a home run, two RBIs and three runs. Senior Giorgiana Zeremenko earned Pitt's other long ball of the day, roping her 13th home run of the season over the center field wall. Sophomore Kaitlyn Kruger went 2-for-3 to go along with an RBI while junior Olivia Gray went 2-for-4 with a run.
In the circle, senior Kayla Harris started the game for the Panthers. The senior allowed six hits and one run in four innings of play while recording her ninth win of the season and her sixth in conference play. She is now 9-1 on the season. Junior Taylor Rahach took the mound in the fifth inning, where she struck out one and walked two before junior Sarah Dawson entered the game to close things out. The junior allowed just one hit and one run while striking out a batter in the final 2.2 innings of the game.
Scoring Summary: Pitt 6, Georgia Tech 2
It didn't take long for the Yellow Jackets to find the board, as leadoff batter Draven Sonnon sent a ball over the center field wall on the second pitch of the game to give Georgia Tech a 1-0 lead at conclusion of the opening inning.
Pitt tied the game in the bottom of the second, thanks to a throwing error by Georgia Tech, which allowed Levesque to score on what should have been the first out of the inning. After laying down a bunt that went right between the circle and first, Levesque beat out the throw to first to single, however she didn't stop there as the first baseman overthrew her coverage and sent the ball to the right field corner. Levesque used her speed to travel around the bases, reaching home to tie knot the score, 1-1.
Levesque stepped up again for the Panthers as she knocked out a two-run bomb in the bottom of the third inning, scoring Gray who led off the frame with a hit and giving the Panthers a two-run lead.
Pitt added three insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend its lead to 6-1. Zeremenko led off with her 13th homer of the season. Solak continued the inning with a double to center and scored on consecutive errors by the Yellow Jackets on the same play. Levesque hit a ball through the legs of the shortstop, which also went through the legs of the left fielder, allowing her to reach third and Solak to reach home. Kruger tallied her second hit of the day and picked up her lone RBI, sending in Levesque.
Dawson dealt in the last two innings, giving up her only hit and run to Georgia Tech on a solo shot in the sixth inning. She and the defense went on to hold the Yellow Jackets en route to the 6-2 victory.
