Panthers Drop Series Finale to Duke

Comeback Falls Short Against the Blue Devils.
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped is final game of the series to Duke, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Vartabedian Field in the Petersen Sports Complex.
Despite the loss, the Panthers [19-13-1, 8-3 ACC] earned their fourth ACC series win of the season after defeating the Blue Devils [19-17, 5-7 ACC] in their first games a home Saturday, March 31.
Pitt struggled at the plate in today's contest as Duke pitcher Peyton St. George held the Panthers to just three hits and one run scored. St. George didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning of play, while holding the home team scoreless until the seventh.
Junior Marissa DeMatteo highlighted Pitt's offensive play, as she ripped a liner over the right field wall to score the squad's lone run of the day.
Junior Sarah Dawson, who got the start in the circle today for the Panthers, tossed a solid game as she gave up just two runs, only one earned, while striking out three. Despite allowing seven hits, Dawson and the defense kept Pitt within striking distance but the Panthers were unable to complete the comeback in the seventh.
Scoring Summary: Duke 2, Pitt 1
A solo shot led to the first run of the game, as Duke's Rachel Abboud sent a ball over the left center wall in the open inning of play to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
Defense took over for both teams in the next three innings as each team held the other scoreless.
It wasn't until the fifth frame that the Blue Devils added an insurance run on a RBI-double, scoring a baserunner that reached on a fielding error by Pitt.
The Panthers final two attempts at the plate came up short as Pitt left two runners on base in the sixth and only saw DeMatteo's home run in the seventh.
