BOCA RATON, Fla. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team earned their second win of the Parents' Weekend Tournament Thursday evening, as the squad defeated FAU 7-1 at FAU Softball Stadium in Boca Raton, Fla.
With the victory, the Panthers earn their second win of the day and move to 13-7-1 overall, while the Owls fall to 11-12 on the season.
Pitt scored seven runs in the game on an eight hit performance and with the help of three FAU errors. Three Panthers recorded two hits apiece, in freshman Hunter Levesque, junior Olivia Gray and senior Erin Hershman. Levesque and Gray each earned two RBI in the game.
In the circle, senior Kayla Harris went the distance, giving up just one unearned run on a defensive error. Harris struck out one batter, while giving up just five hits in 29 batters faced.
SCORING SUMMARY
After three scoreless innings of play, the Panthers broke through in the top of the fourth frame to take a 2-0 lead. Following the first out, Fredericks walked to put a runner on first. She was replaced by freshman pinch runner Morgan Batesole, who scored two batters later on a double to right field by Levesque. A single up the middle by Gray in the next at-bat brought around Levesque.
Pitt's bats came alive in the fifth inning, as the Panthers scored five runs on five hits and two errors. Hershman led off with a double down the left field line and scored on a single up the middle by senior McKayla Taylor. An FAU error allowed senior Giorgiana Zeremenko to reach first and Taylor to advance to second. Both runners, including junior Marissa DeMatteo who pinch ran for Zeremenko advanced a base on a passed ball. Taylor scored on a single to left by junior Gabrielle Fredericks, while DeMatteo tagged up on as sac fly by junior Alexis Solak. Levesque and Gray posted back-to-back RBI singles to bring the score to 7-0.
FAU scored its lone run of the game in the fifth on a throwing error by the Panthers with a runner on.
