Pitt Drops Game One, Bounces Back to Win Game Two
MIAMI – The University of Pittsburgh softball team split its midweek doubleheader with FIU, Wednesday evening at Felsberg Field in Miami.
Pitt [11-7-1] dropped the opening game 8-0 in five innings, but bounced back in game two with a 2-0 victory.
Pitt struggled in the first game of the doubleheader, as the visiting team was held to just one hit curtesy of senior Giorgiana Zeremenko. FIU [12-12] starting pitcher Shannon Saile, struck out 10 batters en route to a one-hit, five-inning shutout.
The Panthers responded in game two behind senior starting pitcher Kayla Harris, who tossed a complete game shutout. With the help of the defense, Harris posted five innings in which she retired FIU in order, giving up just four hits, while striking out one. She faced just 24 batters.
At the plate, Pitt recorded just four hits in game two and just one in the lone scoring inning. The squad capitalized off of a FIU error in the sixth as freshman Hunter Levesque hit a high fly ball to right which FIU's right fielder dropped, allowing two runs to score. Senior McKayla Taylor, who ripped a leadoff single and junior Marissa DeMatteo, who pinch ran for Zeremenko following a walk, scored the Panthers' two runs on the play.
Game One Scoring Summary: FIU 8, Pitt 0 [Five Innings]
FIU earned the first runs of the game in the bottom half of the opening inning after a double by Tatyana Forbes set up a one out, RBI-single for Kassandra Castle. Forbes moved to third on a grounder back to Rahach in the circle, and came home on a slow roller to Taylor short of third base.
A five-run second inning put the FIU Panthers on top 6-0. Following a leadoff single, Rahach struck out then next two batters swinging, but walked the next batter to put runners on first and second. Four straight hits brought around five runs before Pitt recorded the final out of the inning.
Knight replaced Rahach in the circle in the third, tossing a scoreless inning to start. However, in the both the fourth and fifth innings, she gave up an RBI-single to lead FIU to an 8-0 run-rule victory.
Scoring Summary: Pitt 2, FIU 0
The only runs of the game were scored in the top of the sixth inning by Pitt, thanks to an error by FIU. Taylor led off the frame with a single up the middle and was joined on base by Zeremenko, who walked. The Panthers rallied with two away after juniors Gabrielle Fredericks and Alexis Solak both got out. Levesque hit a high fly ball to short right field, which the right fielder dropped. Taylor and DeMatteo, who pinch ran for Zeremenko, both came around on the play as the ball rolled far enough away from the defense.
