Standout Weekend at North Carolina Leads to Honors
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Giorgiana Zeremenko of the University of Pittsburgh softball team was tabbed Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Player of the Week after an impressive performance in Pitt's three-game series against North Carolina.
Zeremenko continued her wrath at the plate as she led the Panthers to a series victory at UNC. The Canonsburg, Pa., native finished the weekend with a .700 average, going 7-for-10 at the plate with six extra-base hits including three home runs and three doubles, one of each in every game.
The senior tallied six RBIs, while scoring four times herself after reaching base safely in nine of her 12 appearances. With her four runs scored, she now sits fifth all-time in the category with 116. Zeremenko was also intentionally walked twice on the weekend, in her final two appearances. On the series, she reached base 75 percent of the time and posted a 1.900 slugging percentage.
Defensively, she caught all three games for Pitt, picking off a runner and catching one stealing.
In the opening game of the series, Zeremenko led the Panthers at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a two-run shot and a double, marking her first of each on the weekend.
Pitt handed the Tar Heels their first ACC loss of the season in game two. Zeremenko posted her second double of the weekend, as well as her second home run, this one a three-run shot. She finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored.
Zeremenko recorded her third long ball of the weekend and her 10th of the season in the final contest. She finished the game 2-for-2 with a double, in addition to the home run and was intentionally walked in her final two appearances.
The Panthers will look to continue their success this weekend when they visit Virginia Tech for a three-game series beginning Friday, March 23 at 6 p.m. in Blacksburg, Va.
